I have always been interested in light and how it can be manipulated and customized in many different ways. In the past I have tried putting different found materials like colored plastic from food/beverage packaging over one of the lights in my room to change the color and feel of the light.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity of helping out a director of photography and lighting for a commercial shoot and had the chance to work with different light gels on set. This experience inspired the materials used in this project.
This “MOD” lamp —standing for modification, something I am passionate about in my design— is a foldable, portable lamp that is intended for people who enjoy simple yet fun lighting options. It is designed to be assembled quickly and use cheap materials like thick paper, transparent plastic, and lighting gels.
The customizable aspect of the project comes in with the gel inserts. Inside the box there are many colors of inserts which can mixed and matched in endless combinations on four sides of the lamp. Additionally, there are black paper inserts meant for the top of the lamp that can be cut by the user to create different playful projections onto the cieling.
